Forsaken Dreams by MaryLu Tyndall

Forsaken Dreams, the first book in the Escape to Paradise Series by MaryLu Tyndall, lives up to expectations.  If you have ever read MaryLu's work, you know that she loves to include pirates, romance and a relationship with God (not neccesarily that order) and she's done a great job of incorporating them all in this most recent work.

Eliza Crawford is trying to escape -- the bad choices she's made, the hateful accusations and the family that disinherited her.  On her way to Brazil to make a new life for herself, she finds that the past  has followed her.  Along the way she meets several people who are also trying to escape what's left behind and make new lives for themselves. Including Colonel Blake Wallace, wanted by the Union for Confederate war crimes.

Colonel Blake Wallace has seen so much death.  He just wants to escape to Brazil, where the land is said to be so similar to his beloved South.  Unfortunately, the nightmares of war and the paralyzing memories follow him aboard ship.  When he meets Eliza Crawford, he feels like he has found a balm for his soul.  She is kind and forgiving and gentle and makes him forget the terrors of war.  When he finds out about her secret past, he can't seem to forgive her.

In the meantime, the ship comes under some strange happenings.  Are they caused by an act of God to punish someone's sin?  Are they just natural disasters?  Can the ship crew and passengers survive the going-ons? Can they survive their differences to make it to Brazil?

My Review:

I CANNOT wait until the next book in this series!! I couldn't put Forsaken Dreams down.  As I said to begin with, MaryLu has done it again.  This book is a must read, especially if you have read and enjoyed any of MaryLu's other books.

Before I had the chance to read the book, I looked at some reviews of the book on Amazon.  There are a few disheartening reviews... actually, there are some that are downright rude.  I believe that MaryLu has done her best to research the events of that time period and has portrayed them appropriately.  The thing that bugged me the most, was the review that said MaryLu should have made the characters more "Christian" and then there were the ones that said that the book was pro-slavery.  From what I read, the characters are like every other Christian I know -- imperfect.  They struggle with their day-to-day walk and some live it better than others.  In the end, there is usually a reconciliation, because that's what GOD desires.  As for the book being pro-slavery (or pro-South), it was written from the view-point of post-civil war Southerners.  Of course, they would still see nothing wrong with slavery or their way of life.  Of course, they are going to have a fear and almost hatred of the North and anyone that was northern by choice or birth.  This doesn't mean that MaryLu or this book are pro-slavery, pro-hatred, etc.

Please, check out the book before you pass judgement! It's a GREAT read that you won't regret!
