About A Noble Groom:
Michigan, 1880
Annalisa Werner's hope for a fairy tale love is over. Her husband failed her in every way and now his death has left her with few options to save the family farm. She needs a plentiful harvest. That, and a husband to help bring it in. Someone strong, dependable. That'll be enough. A marriage for love...that's something she's given up on.
So her father sends a letter to his brother in the Old Country, asking him to find Annalisa a groom.
Then a man appears: Carl Richards, from their home country of Germany and a former schoolteacher---or so he says. He's looking for work and will serve on the farm until her husband arrives.

With time running out, she accepts his help, but there's more to this man than he's admitting. He's also gentle, kind, charming---unlike any man she's ever known. But even as Carl is shining light into the darkness of her heart, she knows her true groom may arrive any day.

My Review:
I really enjoyed Jody Hedlund's A Noble Groom. It's always nice when people can be redeemed, and in this novel, not only are Annalisa and her two daughter's redeemed, but so is Carl Richards.
Carl Von Reichart has never really agreed with his father, Baron Von Reichart's way of doing things. He is too hard and distant from the workers in his mines, but Carl has never done anything about it. Recently, a bomb using Carl's laboratory supplies was set off in the duke's palace, killing a servant and injuring one of the nobleman's sons. Carl is sent to prison to await beheading. All the while, he remains in prayer... when his manservant, who had raised him from boyhood, shows up he is relieved and confused. This is his chance for escape-- a letter and a pouch of money is all he is allowed as he makes his way to America to make a new start.
Annalisa Werner's husband is not what she expected. He is abusive and demanding and neglectful. When he is murdered while working one day in the field, she isn't sure if it's an accident or murder, either way, she isn't very sad about his death. She thinks she has found freedom and the chance to save her land and raise her children with the love they deserve, until she hears her father insisting on finding her a husband among their kin in the old country. She only has a certain amount of time to try to pay off her land before a new husband comes into the picture. Then Carl Richards comes along. He's a former schoolteacher that has been accused of a crime of which he is not guilty. As the letter from her Uncle Matthias says, he just needs a new start.
Carl and Annalisa are both in need of a new start... both in need of redemption. Can their love overcome their pasts and the future that haunts them? Can Carl live with the people he recently thought so low beneath him? Can Annalisa look past the sins of Carl's father to the noble man that Carl is and forgive and love him?
