The Headmistress of Rosemere by Sarah Ladd

About the Book (from the back of the book):

At twenty-five, Patience Creighton is already a spinster.  The busy headmistress of Rosemere always expected a dashing man to sweep her off her feet and take her away... but that man never came.  And since her father's death, keeping the school running and her mother happy has been plenty to keep her occupied.

William Sterling dallied his way into financial trouble and moral danger.  When he is assaulted by his creditors' henchmen on the road home from a tavern, he guides his horse to the doorstep of his tenant, the Rosemere School for Young Ladies.  After being tended to by Patience, the wounded William rides off into the dawn -- but makes a point to learn more about the lovely headmistress.

As he spends more time at Rosemere, something delicate beings to develop between William and Patience.  But that will not deter William's creditors.  With little money to repay his debts, and less for the upkeep of his estate, it becomes clear that sacrificing Rosemere may be the only way to preserve his legacy.  But it may also cost him his happiness.

My Thoughts:

This is the second installment of the Whispers on the Moors series.  While The Headmistress of Rosemere is the second in the series, it really isn't necessary to read them in order or to have read the first book at all.  I would definitely recommend reading the first book, The Heiress of Winterwood-- this is where you will first meet William Sterling and get a glimpse of his character, but he is a secondary character in that book.

In The Headmistress of Rosemere, we meet Patience Creighton and learn more of William Sterling.  It is a wonderfully written story set in the 1800s. Patience is a lovely, kind, patient young woman of twenty-five -- a spinster in her day, but the girls in her school love her!  She is father, mother, nurse, teacher and friend.  But, something is missing... something she dreamed of as a young girl.

William has gotten himself deep into debt with the wrong people.  When those people threaten his tenants, he has to make a change.  As William tries to clean up his act, he learns things from his past that were hidden and he has to make some difficult choices about his future.

I really enjoyed this book.  It kept me wanting to read (instead of doing other things that I should have been doing!).  If you enjoy Downton Abbey and that genre, you should enjoy this book.  Sarah Ladd has another hit book on her hands!!
